How do I set the Gear Mesh on my Model?

Reinstall the pinion gearHow to Properly Set Gear Mesh on Your RC Car (And Prevent Stripped Spur Gears)

One of the most common causes of stripped spur gears on RC cars is incorrect gear mesh. Whether you’re running an electric basher, a race truck, or a nitro machine, taking a few extra minutes to properly set your mesh can save you from costly repairs and frustrating downtime.

The good news? It’s quick and easy once you know the right method.

Why Gear Mesh Matters

Gear mesh is the amount of space between your pinion gear and spur gear (or clutch bell and spur gear on nitro models).

If the gears are:

  • Too tight → they create excess friction, heat, and premature wear
  • Too loose → the teeth can skip, causing stripped spur gears
  • Just right → smooth power transfer, less wear, and longer gear life

Any time you replace a gear, always check and reset the gear mesh.

How to Set Gear Mesh on Electric RC Cars

Electric RC models use the motor pinion gear and spur gear, and the easiest way to set the correct mesh is with the paper method.

Step-by-Step

  1. Cut a narrow strip of notebook paper
  2. Insert the paper strip between the pinion gear and spur gear
  3. Loosen the motor mounting screws
  4. Slide the motor so the pinion gear presses into the spur gear
  5. Tighten the motor screws securely
  6. Remove the paper strip

Final Check

After removing the paper, run a fresh strip of notebook paper through the gears.

It should:

  • Move through without binding
  • Have light resistance
  • Leave just a tiny amount of gear play
  • Spin smoothly without friction

If it binds, loosen and reset.

How to Set Gear Mesh on Nitro RC Cars

Nitro RC vehicles require a similar process, but you’ll be adjusting the clutch bell gear and spur gear by moving the engine mount.

Step-by-Step

  1. Use a strip of standard printer/copy paper (about 0.1mm thick)
  2. Place it between the clutch bell gear and spur gear teeth
  3. Loosen the four engine mount screws from the bottom of the chassis
  4. Slide the engine mount upward until the clutch bell gear presses against the spur gear
  5. Make sure the paper is:
    • Not too tight to pull out
    • Not so loose that it falls out
  6. Tighten the engine mount screws securely
  7. Remove the paper

Final Check

Once the paper is removed, the gears should have:

  • The slightest amount of play
  • Almost no movement
  • No binding
  • No excess friction

The drivetrain should rotate smoothly.

Prevent Spur Gear Damage Before It Starts

Before every run, especially after a hard crash or gear replacement, quickly inspect:

  • Spur gear teeth
  • Pinion gear wear
  • Motor screws
  • Engine mount screws
  • Drivetrain smoothness

A 30-second gear mesh check can save a spur gear.
